The ebb and tide of right and left leaning leaders always leaves the neediest people either very vulnerable or just somewhat vulnerable respectively. It's a tough lot to be in but we have to give them so much credit for the courage to rise up, even knowing that their heads may role. It's dangerously close to where we're headed here in the US.
Agreed. We have to work toward developing and implementing a system that no longer ignores the neediest in every society. Some countries are headed in that direction with the minimum guaranteed income system. The obstacles are many, but if the will is there, who knows?
Such a huge part of the challenge is getting past greed and the concept of Zero-sum gain. An example being - where people don't want to use their taxes to subsidize housing to get "low -Lifes" off the street but they'll hire all kinds of extra policing to deal with the consequences of people who can't find jobs while living in tents. Providing affordable housing is a win-win for everyone if we can get past our own noses.
