Thank you for making this freely available, and yes, aren't we all students, all life long? All best for you.

Ahh Louise, I think few countries in the world don't have problems in 2024, which is quite worrying when by now, after all we have learned, we should be cruising... happy on our land, with our people and our leaders...

My husband and I often wonder (or at least discuss) where we would go if we had to move from France, hopefully it will never be a real question though because we don't know, because everywhere has its problems!

Once again, I have to agree with you, Susie. It's 2024, and, after all the progress we have made, we find ourselves at a critical juncture, on the precipice of teetering back in time. Honestly, where on earth can people go?

I hadn’t heard this song! I grew up in Canada in the 70s and 80s with many “draft dodgers” as teachers and later university professors. It’s an age-old temptation I guess. After Brexit in the UK in 2016 I got frustrated with all the Americans and Canadians talking about going “home”. Stay and fight, I told them! We often think of migration as an economic or political necessity. But it can also be a political cop-out.

Yes, it can be. Agree that there’s a lot of privilege displayed by “going home” when the going gets tough. Granted, “fighting” takes shape in many ways, from walking on the line holding a sign to making the signs in the back room to funding the materials to make the signs. After going home, if you do nothing about the situation (eg Brexit), then yeah, it’s a cop-out.

Thoughtful. And inspiring…Thanks! I live close enough to Canada I could escape there for six months in a crisis. But my cats! I keep thinking about what “fighting back” looks like. I’m not much for marching. And now Rump adm might be able to label some organizations “terrorists.” Recent bill 9495 passed in Congress I think.

But how to help vulnerable folks? even legal immigrants are targets for deportation. Local community activism I guess. Helping neighbors. Staying healthy. Thanks for sharing!

Elyse, thanks for your thoughts. Kitties, no, we cannot leave them. I'm nowhere near the U.S., but from here, at least I can make donations. I keep wondering what I would do if I were there. I'm not sure I would have the courage to do much. Or would I? Would I shelter someone? Maybe. I think of the women in history who did take action even as that put their lives as risk.

I agree... local community activism and helping neighbors. Being aware of those most vulnerable and offering to do what we can to help them. Comes down to the famous saying, "Do what you can where you are with what you have."
