What is “Social Issues in Song”?
Most of the songs we usually listen to are about love and life. There are many more songs that are about working together to make a difference, taking care of the earth, standing up to bullies, and much, much more. Social issues... in song. I write a newsletter about those songs twice a week.
Who is in this community?
Native English speakers and students of English.
Why are we here?
To learn about events or people in history by listening to and reading about songs, and by having some discussions about them through chat or live discussions.
Who am I?
I’m Louise Haynes. I have been teaching English (including social issues) for over 35 years, both in Japan and Spain. I’ve been doing research on social issues in music for over 20 years.
For Japanese learners of English:
The level of this newsletter is aimed at Japanese learners of English who have passed Eiken Level 2 or above, or who have scored 450 or above on the TOEIC (unless otherwise noted) or CEFR B1. Of course, everyone is welcome, and English language learners may find the vocabulary glossary at the bottom of the articles useful.
